Building a Culture of Collaboration

As soon as a child has been identified as deaf/hard of hearing through the newborn hearing screening program, early intervention services are often provided to the family as the next step. Typically, parents experience the process of grieving then, and it can sometimes take a while for them to accept that their child is deaf. This presentation will cover how our Kansas School for the Deaf – Outreach Department programs/services [SoundSTART, Deaf Mentor, Language Assessment Program and more] supports our families as well as my personal experience working with families as a Deaf person in different services that we provide. The content will address how we all collaborate and are able to expedite the level of support for the families in constructive ways by working with EHDI, 0 – 3 programs, and school districts (Part C to Part B). At the end of this presentation, the participants will have tools to foster positive experiences for the families they serve in their programs by working as team.

  • The participants will have tools to foster positive experiences for the families they serve in their state by working as a team with the deaf community.
  • The participants will have tools for collaborating with families, their communities and the professionals that work/serve with them.
  • The participants will learn how to ensure that families with deaf/hard of hearing receive comprehensive, unbiased information and support
