Exploring Household Attitudes Toward Money: A Thematic Analysis
Each day families and individuals choose between life necessities or making payments toward debt. These families have entered into this uncertainty with many responsibilities and few resources. As of July of 2020, more than one in five households were at least one month behind in rent. However, in April of the same year, the U.S. personal savings rate reached its highest recorded level of 32.2%, up from 12.7% in March. Americans have historically struggled to save money, with four out of ten Americans unable to pay an unexpected $400 bill out of their savings.
The purpose of this study was to identify an individual’s use of an unexpected increase in their finances. Individuals with higher financial self-efficacy may report a greater ability to deal with financial situations effectively. Previous studies of families and household’s finances have been explored, indicating various approaches and attitudes toward money. Additionally, personal, micro-level factors impact these households and their members. Our aim was to identify some of these approaches, micro-level factors, and attitudes by coding the responses to an open-ended question about their hypothetical use of money.
