Online Divorce Education for Latinx Parents
Mandatory divorce education has become common for divorcing parents with minor children. Such mandates have occurred amid increasing ethnic diversity. Divorce education programs emphasize increasing parental understanding of divorce-related matters such as the impact of divorce on children and the benefits of positive coparenting. Evaluations of divorce education programs are common in family studies literature, however few examples exist of evaluations focusing on participants from historically underrepresented groups. In this study, we performed a mixed-method analysis of survey data collected from Latinx parents who participated in Utah’s online divorce education program. Descriptive statistics indicate that participants agreed the program improved their understanding of divorce-related topics, while influencing their plans to practice positive coparenting, post-divorce. Qualitative analyses revealed that participants found the information about the impact of divorce on children the most helpful, while also showing appreciation for course delivery and knowledge gained on coparenting skills. These findings may aid family life practitioners attempting to design divorce education programs for historically underrepresented groups.
