Electrification of Heavy Duty Vehicles - A Grand Challenge in Transportation

Reducing transportation-related emissions has been a key area of ARPA-E investment over the last eight years. The vast majority of funded projects have involved development of technologies to enable electric light-duty passenger vehicles to reach cost and performance parity with internal combustion engine vehicles. With better batteries and the growing adoption of passenger EVs, a new grand challenge has emerged in the transportation sector: elimination of tailpipe emissions from larger vehicle classes. This presentation will motivate ARPA-E’s interest in this problem statement, as well as introduce recently funded work seeking to more accurately quantify the economic and environmental implications of regional electric roadway deployment.

Joseph Manser (), ARPA-E, joseph.manser@hq.doe.gov;
Joseph Manser currently serves as a Fellow at the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E). As an ARPA-E Fellow, Manser explores new technology development investment opportunities that have the potential for disruptive impact in the energy sector. His interests include innovations in energy storage, transportation, solar heat and light energy conversion, and power electronics. Joe was involved in the design and creation of the ARPA-E CIRCUITS program, which focuses on development of next-generation high efficiency, high power density power converters. He is heavily involved in the exploration of transformational opportunities in grid-scale energy storage. Manser received his Ph.D. as a Dean’s Fellow in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 2016.

Paul Albertus (), ARPA-E, paul.albertus@hq.doe.gov;
Dr. Paul Albertus currently serves as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). His focus at ARPA-E includes energy storage for transportation and stationary applications, energy conversion, and energy materials. Prior to joining ARPA-E, Albertus spent more than four years at the Bosch Research and Technology Center in Palo Alto, California, working on electrochemical energy storage systems. His work has included mathematical modeling of electrochemical processes, energy storage system and cost analysis, and electrochemical and thermal property measurements. While at Bosch Research he helped to set up the Bosch Energy Research Network, which provides energy-related research grants to universities and internships to students. Albertus completed his B.S.E. at the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, both in Chemical Engineering.
