“Specific Heat Capacity and Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity of Additively Manufactured Carbon Reinforced Thermoplastics.”
Hybrid materials may be used to obtain unique properties that are not available through traditional materials design and selection. The present study investigates the thermophysical properties of hybrid AA6061+water materials produced by ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM). These components are made by milling pockets into AA6061 block, filling them with water, and then sealing by the addition of AA6061 sheet metal using UAM. The effective properties are dependent on three sets of constituent structures: the AA6061 substrate, water, and the UAM AA6061. Flash diffusivity with a Xenon flash lamp and a high speed IR camera was used to measure the effective properties of components with different pocket sizes, including consideration for the anisotropy of the thermal conductivity. Directions for future research were identified.
