Increase in the coverage of audiological services in LMIC: Experience in Guatemala
The health system of Guatemala, like that of many other LMIC, does not offer audiological services; these services are almost unknown to many. As a result, there is no professional or skilled personnel in this field.
Smiles that Listen Foundation (Sonrisas que Escuchan) was born in 2009 and its primary purpose is to provide audiological services, through networks of collaboration and training of personnel. The population we serve increases every year, but we see a pressing need to increase the outreach of services and geographical areas we serve.
To achieve this goal and, given insufficient financial resources, in the last three years our efforts have been focused on three activities that we hope will assist us increase services and coverage.
1. Training of human resources
2. Obtain subsidies for specific programs
3. Strategic alliances with large companies with social interest in a specific geographical area.
At this time when financial contributions have significantly decreased, we must focus our efforts on short-term goals, specific programs and the transfer of knowledge.
- Share successful practices to fund audiological service programs.
- Encourage participants to think outside the traditional framework of fundraising.
