Concrete-Based Magnetic Composites: Designs for Enhanced Permeability and Mechanical Strength

Concrete is the most widely used engineered construction material in the world. In the US, it provides the annual revenue of more than $100 billion, indirectly employing more than half of million professionals with the expected growth of 8% by 2020. This large economic footprint is at the same time large potential for secondary or multifunctional use of concrete. In this presentation, we will address the modeling of large-particle, concrete/mortar-based Structural Magnetic Composites (SMCs), with the emphasis on impact of morphology, orientation, and segregation of magnetic particles. By developing a novel multidisciplinary framework for SMC modeling, we provide the tool for enhancing the effective magnetic permeability, maintaining strength and durability of the composite, and reducing the amount of expensive magnetic ferrite materials used in production. This will reduce the overall cost of production of in-motion charging pads and may lead to more rapid adoption as the prevalence of EVs increases.
