How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected the timeliness of hearing screening follow-up in Louisiana?

Delayed follow-up visits after initial hearing screenings may affect time of complete diagnosis of hearing loss, which is recommended by three months of age (Joint Committee on Infant Hearing). The Covid-19 pandemic has existed since March 2020 in the United States. The pandemic adversely impacted many health care services due to closure of health care facilities, limitation of time and number of appointments at health care facilities because of staffing shortages, or patients cancelling appointments to reduce exposure risks. In Louisiana, newborn hearing screening has been impacted as well. The purpose of this study is to assess how timeliness of hearing screening follow-up visits is impacted during the pandemic in Louisiana. Specifically, the study will analyze the time trends of follow-up visits among children who did not pass newborn hearing screen prior to hospital discharge and needed a follow-up after discharge. Because most children have one or two follow-up visits, the study will analyze the trends of (1) time between inpatient screen and first follow-up visit, and (2) time between first and second follow-up visit. The trends will be evaluated among children who were born between Jan 2019 and September 2021 in Louisiana. Linear regressions are used to evaluate the trends. Results of data analysis will be discussed during the presentation.
