Agricultural Counting: How USDA establishes official crop and livestock numbers for the U.S.

USDA NASS is the official data collection arm of USDA. Each year, NASS surveys thousands of farmers and ranchers in the U.S. in order to provide timely, accurate statistics to help ensure a safe and stable food and fiber supply for our nation. USDA NASS produces more 450 reports. In this presentation, we will discuss how survey sampling works; how one farmer may be representative for a multitude of other farmers; how remote sensing data from satellite imagery is used for estimating crop acreages and how NASS reports help to measure the supply of food and fiber.
