Extending Model-Based System Engineering using DIS
Since the IEEE standard DIS (Distributed Interactive Simulation) has been incorporated into many large defense/space programs, creating an adapter that utilizes this interface can extend existing models through external tools as well as open them to larger collaborative networks.
Innovate Defense Technologies (IDT) currently has a product that utilizes this interface to gain access to the Naval Research Laboratory visualization tool SIMDIS. By adhering to specific portions of the standard, tactical data collected from operational naval combat systems can be broadcast for use by other desired distributed tools and simulations. Using a lightweight, non-intrusive adapter can extend the impact of a system in some exciting new ways, such as real-time systems analysis based on tactical environment, and the ability to record and replay that environment for post-analysis.
This adapter will also open the door to collaborating with other robust simulations and analysis tools that have been developed outside the world of defense/space programs. Extending this adaptive layer to utilize the functionality incorporated in these private sector/unclassified programs broadens the set of use cases of existing models and systems.
