Routine Ready- Embedding CASLLS into Home Activities
Language development is meant to be functional and help a child communicate successfully in their typical settings. When learning activities are embedded into a child’s most important setting, their homes, the taught skills generalize more effectively to their lives. The Cottage Acquisition Scales for Listening Language and Speech (CASSLS) can be used as a tool to identify areas to target in a developmentally appropriate way. When we combine this effective tool with routines in the home, we intentionally create the opportunity for increased language development in a child’s most meaningful place. Together, parents and professionals can utilize the CASLLS to pick effective language targets and teach them in routines that are familiar and important to the child creating effective language. When creating intentional language learning opportunities, there are many ways parents and professionals can plan. This process can be selecting targets or routines first and vice versa. This presentation will focus on both approaches to maximize potential opportunities in the home with the following objectives: 1) Help parents and professions identify language opportunities in daily routines and how they can be utilized for each child. 2) Identify how a specific language goal can be embedded into daily routines for functional language generalization. 3) Demonstrate how to track language development using the CASLLS or other informal assessments.

Lauren Smith is a teacher of the Deaf in St. George Utah. She has coached parents and guardians of students from birth to age 10. She loves coaching over teleintervention and in person. Her special interests in the field include speech babble, coaching, and music as a teaching tool.
