Hunting Management of Red Listed Willow Ptarmigan on Public Land in Norway
During 2009-2016 we studied the effect of hunting and hunting restrictions on the harvest of red listed willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) and the hunters opinions of the restrictions on the Norwegian State-Owned Forest and Land Enterprise (Statskog) lands (26,828 km2) in Northern Norway.
Less than 10 % of the estimated August population was harvested, but as hunting block densities decreased below 10 willow ptarmigan km-2, the estimated daily removal rates increased markedly, and at low densities we estimated more than 25 % harvest in some hunting blocks. Most hunters were willing to reduce harvest when regarded necessary, but they preferred restrictions affecting hunter categories to which they did not belong. Most hunters were not affected by the present bag limit of 4 ptarmigan per day which was reached in only 6 % of the hunting days. To reduce the harvest by 50%, the daily bag limit had to be reduced to 1 ptarmigan per day, which the hunters did not find acceptable.
We recommend Statskog to continue estimating August densities and record harvest within an experimental design with a standard bag limit 4. Half of the hunting block with estimated densities below 10 willow ptarmigan km-2 should be protected from hunting. Half the hunting blocks with estimated densities over 25 ptarmigan km-2 should have no bag limits. By switching experimental- and standard management blocks, Statskog will gain valuable insights on the impact of willow grouse hunting.
