Identifying Effective Practices to Support Early Linguistic Competence: Project Update

The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (Clerc Center) at Gallaudet University is a federally funded national demonstration program established to explore effective practices impacting the education of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. During Fall, 2011, the Clerc Center launched an Early Intervention initiative to address a documented need in the field to identify and share evidence based early intervention practices. The goal of this initiative has been to: a) gather evidence documenting factors shown to positively support the development of early linguistic competence for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, b) identify recommendations for EI practices reflective of this evidence, c) identify EI programs and services throughout the United States who are implementing practices supportive of the identified evidence and,d) disseminate information highlighting the evidence and practices identified via this initiative. The early status of this project was shared during the 2011 EHDI conference. This presentation will provide an update on the progress of the Clerc Center EI initiative, including a discussion of the evidence that has been identified and the associated implications of this evidence for early intervention programs and service providers. Also shared will be the status of this initiative in regard to identifying early intervention programs and service providers who are implementing research driven practices, and plans at the Clerc Center to collaborate with these EI service providers and programs to highlight their promising innovative evidence based practices. A few of the identified collaborators will be available during this presentation to discuss their participation with this initiative.

  • Describe the Clerc Center Early Intervention Initiative.
  • Discuss the 6 evidence based factors found to positively impact linguistic competence identified via the Clerc Center Early Intervention initiative.
  • Discuss the plans of the Clerc Center to collaborate and share information about national programs employing identified evidence based practices.
