CYANOBACTERIA DYNAMICS IN A MAJOR ANDEAN WATER RESERVOIR IMPACTING A LARGE POPULATION IN SOUTHERN PERU
High-altitude ‘Andean’ water reservoirs are important components of the Peruvian water ecosystem. They provide drinking water to about 60% of the Peruvian population. Cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms are known to occur in these environments, being a major public health concern. However, few reports exist that systematically address their prevalence and community structure, and impact to urban water supply. In this study, we investigated phytoplankton dynamic and community structure in El Pañe water reservoir, a major infrastructure located at 4,580 m.a.s.l. that provides raw water to the Arequipa Metropolitan area. Monthly counts were undertaken between March and December from 2017 to 2020. A cyanobacteria population dynamic with high concentrations at summer months and cryptophyceans dominance in cold months was observed. Up to 1.4 x 104 cells mL?1 Dolichospermum cf. circinale, a potentially toxic species, was measured. This fluctuation and prevalence could be explained by both climate and anthropogenic activities throughout El Pañe basin. Widespread Andean aquaculture is known to occur upstream El Pañe reservoir. However, further analysis of contributing streams will be needed to confirm this observation. Implications of cyanobacteria presence in the water supply quality impacting local populations is discussed.
