A Report on the Effectiveness of Tele-Intervention Using Real-Time Embedded Coaching
The Moog Center for Deaf Education engaged in a 15 month tele-intervention project with ten families from around the United States. This project was designed to further develop and expand the Tele-School program for children, ages 0-3, and their families, at the Moog Center. The program included 1) an initial meeting at the Moog Center to meet the family, evaluate the child and practice with technology; 2) Delivery to parents of a total of 722 online coaching sessions, 3) a three-day final meeting of all families and children at Moog Center in June, 2014 to conduct final evaluations, discuss transition from the Tele-Intervention program, de-brief families regarding their experience in the program and elicit recommendations for the future and 4) Moog staff mentors met bi-weekly to discuss the project and make modifications as needed. This presentation will be a report of that project and will include results as well as lessons learned.
Results from the MacArthur-Bates Communication Development Inventories indicate that the number of expressive vocabulary words at the beginning ranged from 0-173 and at the end ranged from 206-606, while the results of the Preschool Performance Scale-5 indicate that all children made more than a year’s growth in a year’s time except one child who was already in the average range at the beginning. Standard Scores on the PLS-5 ranged from 60-102 at the beginning and 81-114 at the end of the project.
Lessons learned include:
• Changes needed to be made to our face-to-face sessions because parents participating in Tele-Intervention seemed more engaged and accountable than families being served face-to-face.
• Tele-Intervention is an effective service delivery model.
This presentation will describe for the participants, through lecture, discussion, video tape and interactive activities how to effectively implement tele-intervention sessions using real-time embedded coaching.

Judy has been in the field of deaf education for more than 25 year. She has worked as a supervisor of other teachers, has extensive experience working with student teachers, has lectured for graduate courses, and is an experienced teacher in the field of Early Intervention. In addition to teaching in the Family School program at the Moog Center where she provides direct service to children, helping them to develop spoken language skills, Judy has also taught in the preschool and in the primary department working to enhance the students' academic skills. She works with families, helping parents develop strategies and techniques for teaching their children with hearing loss to talk. Judy participates in the Moog Center for Deaf Education Teleschool program and provides services to families via the internet. Judy has extensive experience serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing who present with secondary complicating factors.
