Equity and Cultural Responsiveness
Equity and Cultural Responsiveness: Effective educational leaders use culturally responsive practices and strive for cultural competency and equity of educational opportunity to promote each student's academic success and well-being. Everybody loves their children and wants them to succeed in school and in life. As educators, our job is to break down the barriers that children face every day as they and their families work to navigate an education system that data shows does not always work for them. While there are no silver bullets, there are things that we know work and can change the trajectory and lives of all students in Utah. From creating welcoming schools to using data to drive equitable decisions, learn and share practices that have begun to level the playing field and give students and their families what they need to succeed.
- Educators will make connections between themselves as leaders and the new USBE Leadership Standards-Strand 1: Equity and Cultural Responsiveness.
- Educators will view/review the differences between equality and equity and how to be responsive to inequitable school data.
- Educators will learn specific strategies that promote “culturally responsive practices, strive for cultural competency and equity of educational opportunity and honor students’ heritage and background.”

Jennifer Mayer-Glenn

Jennifer Mayer-Glenn is currently the Director of Family-School Collaboration at the Salt Lake City School District. She was an Assistant Principal at Mountain View Elementary and the Glendale Community Schools Campus, a community with over 90% of students receiving free or reduced lunch and 85% racial minorities. While Assistant Principal of Glendale Middle School (GMS), the school moved out of improvement/priority school status in one year. GMS earned 466/600 points; higher than the state average of 434/600 in 2012-13. GMS also earned “Top Performing Middle School in the Salt Lake City School District for 2012-2013.” Ms. Mayer-Glenn provided leadership as the Alternative Language Services Coordinator in the Salt Lake City School District working to provide equitable instruction for English learners (ELs). She taught Special Education and English Language Development for 13 years.
While rigor and high academic expectations of students and teachers are a must, Ms. Mayer-Glenn is also passionate about the important work of building authentic and sustaining family-school and community partnerships focusing on the varied needs, hopes and dreams of underserved communities in Salt Lake City.
When Ms. Mayer-Glenn isn't working toward social justice in a school setting, she is doing community advocacy work as Past President of the Utah Coalition of La Raza, the oldest Latino civil rights advocacy organization in Utah. Ms. Mayer-Glenn earned a fellowship with the National Institute of Latino School Leaders from 2013-2015. She wrote a policy memo on school accountability and met with congressional staffers to inform them of the needs of ELs and Latino students during the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act. She also served as the Chair of the Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission for during which time the commission won awards from Equality Utah and the ACLU of Utah. Ms. Mayer-Glenn earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of Utah and a Master of Education from Westminster College.
