Congenital CMV: A Parental Perspective on Hearing Loss In Children and EHDI Benefits

Congenital CMV (cCMV) in infants continues to be the number one non-genetic cause of hearing loss in children, yet is relatively unheard of amongst the general population. In 2018, as a first time parent, the long term outcome of having a child diagnosed with cCMV was overwhelming. Our son was born with sensorineural hearing loss and it was a confusing path to navigate. Thanks to EHDI we were aware of the damage already done to our son's hearing and were able to immediately take steps to get channels of care lined up to take care of his progressive loss. This presentation will highlight the lifelong impacts of cCMV on families and the importance of EHDI in newborns, with the intention to offer insight on services that benefit families in similar situations.

  • Participants will be able to explain the potential effects that cCMV has on a child's hearing.
  • Participants will be able to better identify what resources within EHDI would be helpful for families who have children effected by hearing loss.
  • Participants will be able to justify the importance of EHDI services in children diagnosed with cCMV.
