The Association of Cognitive Function and Use of Low Cost Hearing Aid in Persons with Hearing Impairment

Hearing impairment has been one of the most prevalent morbidities in the world, is modifiable and is associated with cognitive decline. The objective of determining whether there will be a significant difference in the cognitive function of patients with hearing impairment after a month of usage of low cost hearing aids was then tested using various cognitive function tests. A number of cognitive function tests were used to test the different aspects of cognition namely executive function, memory, language, attention and orientation. Among the 16 participants who completed the study, their mean score of 26.56 at baseline and 27.0625 after 4 weeks with a p-value of more than 0.05 (0.216) based on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment - Philippines (MOCA-P), 0.087 for Trail Making Test, 0.40 for Digital Symbol Substitution Test and 0.177 for Animal Naming Test shows that there has been no significant difference in terms of cognitive function in people with hearing impairment who use low cost hearing aid in a span of four weeks which is coherent with recent studies that state that there is no substantial evidence yet to establish the direct correlation of hearing aid use and cognitive function.

  • to establish if there is an association between cognitive function and Use of Low Cost Hearing Aid in Persons with Hearing Impairment
  • to determine if there will be a significant increase in the cognitive function of patients with hearing impairment fitted with low cost hearing aids.
  • to determine the specific area of cognition will be affected by the use of these low cost hearing aids
