More than “just deaf”: Supporting children who are deaf with disabilities (DWD) and their families

Although estimates vary, individuals who are DWD comprise approximately 40 percent of the total deaf population (Gallaudet Research Institute, 2010). Yet, the resources committed to serving young children who are DWD and the knowledge about how best to support them and their families is limited (Hyte, 2017). Books and academic works that describe topics related to being “just deaf” often acknowledge the limitations of their findings and the limited applicability of their approaches for children who are DWD (Singer et al., 2020). This presentation will pull together existing information that is evidence-informed and offer potential strategies for supporting the optimal growth of young children who are DWD. This presentation will be applicable for practitioners (from the fields of early intervention, as well as medical and allied health providers), educators (nursery/preschool teachers, teachers in early childhood special education), families, and scholars. Given that children who are DWD comprise a significant portion of all children who are deaf or hard of hearing, the information shared in this presentation will have broad applicability.

  • 1. State a minimum of two ways that being DWD is more complex than being “just deaf.”
  • 2. Identify at least two ways that professionals can increase the effectiveness of their support for caregivers of children who are DWD.
  • 3. Describe one or more strategies for supporting the optimal growth of children who are DWD.
