Universal Newborn Hearing Screening in Oman
The Sultanate of Oman is amongst the first nations to undertake Universal Newborn Hearing Screening as a national priority and launched as part of National program on Ear Care. Oman has its population spread over 1200 kilometers and divided into 10 geographical regions. The program was launched at national level in the year 2000.
The mainstay of screening has been Oto-acoustic Emission at primary level and Auditory Brain Stem Response screening at secondary level. Final confirmation is at tertiary level using diagnostic Auditory Brain Stem Response.
The program has achieved close to 90% coverage of hearing screening when considered all the regions. This is short of ideal that is 95% but encouraging and amongst the best coverage when considered at national level. The program has evolved consistently and has been the main feeder for the Cochlear Implant program. It has helped in bringing down the age at Cochlear implantation.
The Programme has had it difficulties. Equipment breakdown, especially the probes, has been the main reason for intermittent drops in percentage coverage in various regions. Another area to be strengthened is the drop outs between the secondary and tertiary level of screening. However, many of the problem areas are sorted out at the annual national meet where all regions present their achievements and limitations with the central program managers.
