MED-El Symposium on Cultural Sensitivity
Latinos are currently the largest cultural minority group in the United States with Spanish being the second most common spoken language. This population is expected to increase dramatically in the next decade. As the general Latino population increases, so will the Spanish speaking population with hearing loss. As hearing health professionals, we must be prepared to handle the issues of diversity and be equipped with proper resources when counseling the Spanish speaking population. This course will introduce the unique needs and challenges of this population particularly those whose first language is Spanish. We will discuss how exhibiting cultural sensitivity can lead to cultural competence. The course will introduce some simple yet critical questions about this target population that will lead us towards cultural sensitivity. Although it is important to provide clinical care and deliver services in their native language, it is even more important to understand the culture. This presentation will introduce MED-EL’s first bilingual program in the industry and the reason behind the creation of this unique program. This will include our current resources that are available that can be used when counseling this population. This session will be valuable to families and clinicians and will provide an improved perspective on this unique population, and gain knowledge on MED-EL’s current support services and programs, such as our HearPeers Latino program.
