Between a Rock and Hard Place: A Qualitative Analysis of Suicidal Thoughts of LDS Queer Individuals
Research has repeatedly suggested lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals are at an elevated risk for considering, attempting and committing suicide. Though a number of benefits have been associated with religious affiliation, members of the gay community are less likely to recieve such benefit. Often people feel torn towards their faith and their fundamental sense of identity. For LGB members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, those challenges are no different. Consequently, it continues to be a complicated issue. A survey of over 200 LGB individuals of the LDS faith who reported previous suicidal thoughts or behaviors was conducted to better understand their inner experience. Utilizing a qualitative approach to analyze participants responses, five themes emerged: 1) Self-hatred/sense of brokenness, 2) Negative experiences, 3) Conflict between sexuality and religion, 4) Emotional pain, 5) Burden to others. Though the last two themes are generally present in suicidal individuals, all of the themes have roots in the conflict between the individuals’ sexuality and their faith.
