The Whole Child: Incorporating Developmental Milestones into Assessment, Lesson Planning , Play and Daily Activities

Looking for new ideas to enhance your early intervention practice? Are you wondering how to address more than listening and language skills? This presentation will discuss an approach that is focused on a whole child perspective. Birth to three is a critical time for development in many domains. We will discuss the domains that are important for communication competency. A child will acquire skills in the different domains at different rates. This is particularly relevant for a child with hearing loss who for example will initially acquire cognitive skills more rapidly than listening and spoken language skills prior to access to sound. Knowledge of milestones in the different domains is critical to be able to effectively assess a child’s ongoing progress. Additionally, this knowledge assists in choosing and modifying goals to meet the child’s needs. We will review key milestones in the areas of audition, receptive language, expressive language, speech production, play, pragmatics, cognition, and literacy. We will then discuss using the milestones to choose goals in all domains and incorporate them into specific play activities and daily experiences. Case studies will be presented allowing the attendees an opportunity to apply milestone knowledge to assess a child’s current level of skills and develop a lesson plan based on findings. Participants will also be provided with play activities and then organize the lesson plan to include facilitation of the various domains.

  • Participants will be able to identify appropriate pragmatic developmental milestones in children age birth to three years.
  • Participants will be able to develop a lesson plan that incorporates a whole child perspective (integrated goals that address different developmental domains).
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate ability to tailor goals to individual needs by applying developmental milestones in ongoing assessment.
