No Holding Back: Providing Resources for the Whole Family
Providing resources to a variety of families with children that have a range of hearing loss is critical in the early stages for social emotional, language and overall success. Research shows that high levels of family involvement have been found to support greater language development outcomes in deaf and hard of hearing children. Due to level of hearing loss, causes of hearing loss, onset of hearing loss, benefits from hearing technologies and family dynamics these resources need to vary from each family. This presentation will demonstrate how to integrate research into working with families who have deaf and hard of hearing children. The presentation will include how to set up a bilingual environment (ASL, English, and spoken English) for families to gather along with a variety of activities that can be taught and brought home. This workshop will include interactive technology resources for fostering early literacy.

Jeni is an educator at Rocky Mountain Deaf School. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies from Gallaudet University of Washington, D.C. and a Master of Science degree in Special Education with an Emphasis in Bilingual Deaf Education from National University of San Diego, California. Jeni is currently licensed in the state of Colorado as a Special Education and Elementary Education Teacher. Jeni has a strong background in ASL and English bilingual education. She has been teaching in a bilingual education setting for six years now. She is also involved with Rocky Mountain Deaf School's Toddler Program for three years with a focus in developing innovative visual language and literacy resources for families.

Stephanie Carson

Stephanie Carson is currently the Student Engagement Coordinator at Rocky Mountain Deaf School. She received a Master’s Degree in Deaf Education and Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. She holds a Colorado teaching license and endorsements in K-12 Deaf Education and Elementary Education. She has been in the field of Deaf Education for twelve years. She was a teacher for seven years and has been part of the administration team for five years. During Stephanie’s twelve years at Rocky Mountain Deaf School, she has held a variety of positions including an elementary teacher, middle school teacher, reading teacher, reading specialist, curriculum coordinator, toddler program coordinator, and Early Childhood Education and Elementary instructional coordinator.
