Evidence based approach to online education in audiology

To improve access and quality of hearing health care services worldwide, education of communities and training of professionals should be addressed. There is also a need for education institutions. A study by the World Health Organization (2013) describes service delivery to persons with hearing loss and concluded that there are more qualified professionals and educational facilities in higher income countries. The occurrence of hearing loss in both adults and children are however lower in high income countries compared to developing countries. When comparing the availability of human resources and educational facilities with the prevalence of hearing loss, countries with a higher prevalence of hearing loss have limited or no access to human resources and educational facilities. The use of web-services (specifically mobile technology) allows education institutions to interact, collaborate and create virtual student communities. It provides a flexible learning platform and has a reach worldwide. The use of online education in audiology should however be pursued in a responsible way. Online programme delivery should be cost-effective without compromising content and context of evidence based service delivery. In my presentation, I will discuss the following: - A team based approach to online learning design in audiology. - Describe and give examples on how to use of the five-stage model in online audiology programmes (as described by Gilly Salmons). - Describe the use of e-tivities and e-moderating. The presentation will provide knowledge to participants on how to critically evaluate current online audiology programmes to determine which programme will be most suitable for the organisation or country that they are working with.

Elme Selesho is an audiologist who started her career at the Ear Institute, the largest hearing health care services company in sub-Sahara Africa. She has a passion for education and has spent the last 6 years in developing, editing and presenting various training programmes to students from all over the world. She has dedicated the past 2 years of her work in developing the curriculum and programmes for the Eduplex Training Institute (ETI). ETI is a non-profit online training institution that focusses on developing and managing programmes relating to hearing health care and education of children with hearing loss. Elmé Selesho is currently preparing to register for her Master’s in Education with the University of Pretoria which will focus on online education within the field of audiology.
