Using Cued Speech - Our Family Story

Cued Speech as a mode of communication will be described through the experiences, case study and story of a family with a prelingually deaf son. This session focuses on Cued Speech as it applies to integrating the deaf child into the family. What were their experiences in deaf education, early intervention, preschool, mainstreaming? How did the parents decide to use Cued Speech? What was their path? Current research studies that support the family experience will be discussed as well as a description of how Cued Speech works.

  • Describe Cued Speech and how it is applied to early language acquisition in families
  • Identify the similarities and differences between communication modes.
  • Discuss cueing for communication, literacy and speech development

Sarina Roffe (), National Cued Speech Association, sroffe@cuedspeech.org;
Sarina Roffé is the parent of a native cuer, past president and current Executive Director of the NCSA. An award-winning journalist, she is the subject and author of many articles on deaf education, parenting and the importance of English language in the development of literacy skills. She has presented before national audiences. Her presentation style is interactive, combining a professional presentation with personal anecdotes.
