Three Critical Clients' Rights: Confidentiality, Privacy, and Access to Records

Clients have many rights that correspond to many professional duties of those in the helping professions. Three of those rights tend to cause some confusion among practitioners: confidentiality, privacy, and access to records. This presentation will examine these complex rights of clients.

  • To have participants understand confidentiality and its exceptions.
  • To have participants understand clients' right to privacy.
  • To have participants understand clients' right to access their records.

Shannon Browne is a Clinical Associate Professor at Utah State University, where he teaches various practice classes, child welfare, forensic child welfare, and law and ethics. Prior to teaching, he practiced social work in a number of settings, including a residential treatment facility for substance abusing youth involved in the juvenile justice system, a child guidance clinic, and a mobile crisis program for adolescents.
