Increasing Flexibility of Approach for Language Acquisition in D/HH Children
This presentation will focus on how rigid thinking can be risky when it comes to language acquisition for children who are Deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). The main argument of this presentation is that professionals who work with D/HH children should be flexible and open-minded in their approach to language acquisition with this population. The presentation will explore how a rigid approach might be harmful to these children, as well as how we can transform our practice to be more inclusive, flexible, and open to new ideas. It will include research and evidence-based information to support its education, as well as strategies for practical implementation.
- Participants will be able to state three effects of an incomplete first language acquisition on linguistic abilities
- Participants will be able to describe how rigidity in approach affects first language acquisition in D/HH children
- Participants will be able to identify three ways to increase flexibility of approach for language acquisition in D/HH children
