A Randomized Pilot Study of a Brief Mind-Body Bridging Intervention for Suicidal Ideation

The aim of this prospective, randomized, clinical research trial is to determine whether a Brief Mind-Body Bridging Intervention for Veterans with Suicidal Ideation (MBB-SI) will result in short or longer-term reduction of psychological factors associated with suicidal ideation (SI) and/or suicide- related behaviors compared to Treatment as Usual (TAU). Participants are randomized into two different treatment groups. Those assigned to TAU will receive the normal standard of care treatment from the Suicide Prevention Team and the Mental Health Service. Participants assigned to TAU + MBB will receive treatment from the Suicide Prevention Team and the Mental Health Service, AND asked to participate in four, 90-minute MBB group sessions that will occur four weeks in a row. We hypothesize that Mind-Body Bridging will reduce psychological factors related to suicidal thinking and thus, ultimately decrease suicide by reducing suicidal ideations and associated suicide attempts. Further, we hypothesize that participants assigned to MBB+ TAU will have improved outcomes in (a) psychological flexibility, (b) increased sense of belongingness, (c) decreased negative thought patterns, depressive symptoms, and impulsivity. This project was funded by the Mind Body Bridging Charity.

  • Review the evidence for the use of Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) to treat individuals with suicidal ideations and behaviors.
  • Discuss how the MBB method is being adapted to meet the special needs of the Veteran population.
  • Describe the IRB-approved study design and protocol of the MBB-SI clinical trial.
