Tele-Therapy Early Intervention
There is a growing need for tele-therapy services for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Programs are faced with decisions regarding patient criteria and implementation for evidenced based practice. Many families have restricted access to listening and spoken language services due to financial limitations, an overwhelming family schedule, the COVID-19 pandemic, or distance. Early Intervention for families and children can be challenging to navigate in order to produce the same outcomes as traditional therapy. Case studies will be highlighted in order to demonstrate our protocol for tele-therapy implementation and materials/resources utilized in order to produce effective results. Our Center has established a protocol for identifying eligible candidates for tele-therapy services and has documented resources and outcomes in order to meet patient needs using tele- therapy. Various resources used will be described; such as HIPAA compliant video conferencing technology, computers with cameras, wifi access, and apps. Effective outcomes will be outlined including: progress toward long term goals, parent/patient satisfaction, and carryover of skills and strategies into the patient's least restrictive environment. Effectiveness of tele-therapy at our Center has been documented via parent report, treatment outcomes, increased attendance, and flexible settings. Potential limitations will also be highlighted along with possible solutions to meet individual patient needs.

Emily Noss is an Assistant Professor in Speech-Language Pathology at The University of Tennessee, Health Science Center in the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Emily practices in the Child Hearing Services (CHS) Clinic in Knoxville. She specializes in pediatric Aural Habilitation for children who use cochlear implants and hearing aids, aural/oral communication assessments, pre- and post-cochlear implant evaluations, parent guidance and education, adult cochlear implant auditory training, and Alternative/augmentative communication.

Jestina Bunch has been with UTHSC since August 2015 as a Clinical Assistant Professor serving children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. Mrs. Bunch provides aural/oral evaluation, auditory training, and aural rehabilitation treatment to individuals who use cochlear implants and hearing aids.
