Engaging the Hard-to-Reach Families: Creating EHDI Connections
Families have busy and often complicated lives, and effectively communicating the EHDI message to those we serve can be difficult. Initiating outreach, providing information, and engaging in community are not novel activities; the approaches that we use, however, are rapidly evolving and are as diverse as the populations that we serve. This presentation showcases a variety of approaches to connect with hard-to-reach families. Particular emphasis is placed on effective outreach to families who are Spanish-speaking as well as those in remote areas. Topics include using multiple tactics, and recognizing issues of access, language, culture and preference in planning and implementing communication. Technology based applications are highlighted including the use of texting to follow up with families about their babies’ hearing screenings, using Facebook groups and online chats to create a community of families and provide resources, developing Youtube videos that can be delivered to a computer or Smartphone, and using social media to promote outreach events. The importance of community-based connections is emphasized, and a review of efforts to connect with Texas families following Hurricane Harvey will serve to illustrate a multifaceted approach to link families to services when families are most-challenged. Demonstrations will be provided, and participants will be invited to share their own successful strategies.
- Participants will identify two technology-based strategies that could expand EHDI connections in their own state.
- Participants will describe an effective network of outreach efforts for families in crisis who missed the EHDI 1-3-6 window following Hurricane Harvey.
- Participants will identify barriers to connecting families thorough conventional means, including issue related to community access, language and culture.
