Updates in Federal Education Policy

Federal education policy is always evolving. In the past year we have seen efforts to shrink Medicaid coverage of health services provided in schools and elsewhere, roll back education regulations and policies, and reduce the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act. There is talk of shifting public funds to private schools, and the Secretary of Education wants to “rethink” our nation’s public schools. Parents, EHDI professionals, and deaf education professionals need to keep up with current events so that they can better advocate for deaf and hard of hearing children. This presentation will describe and explain the potential impact of the latest federal education policy.

  • 1. Attendees will be able to identify the process through which Medicaid funds school services and what impact Medicaid has on schools.
  • 2. Attendees will be able to identify the general steps that must be followed in passing, modifying, and repealing regulations.
  • 3. Attendees will be able to identify efforts to roll back the Americans with Disabilities Act and the impact this would have on deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
