Creating Effective Professional-Parent Partnerships Using Evidence-Based Counseling Skills
Counseling is a critical component of audiology service delivery, and plays a key role in helping parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing optimize functional outcomes. For counseling to be an intentional element of practice, audiologists must incorporate micro skills, such as ask open questions, validate emotions, and respond in ways that engage parents, to help them make decisions and find solutions that are right for their family. Recent research related to counseling behaviors within audiology has revealed important gaps, including neglecting to assess and address emotions. Audiologists tend to dominate conversations, and maintain a technical focus throughout encounters. When audiologists miss counseling opportunities it can have negative consequences for patients; however, when audiological counseling is provided within a therapeutic relationship, together, audiologists and parents can uncover barriers to treatment and identify effective solutions. This session will describe recent research, discuss clinical implications, and describe skills that support development of effective parent-professional partnerships.

Karen Muñoz is department head and professor of audiology at Utah State University in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. She is also associate director of the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. Her research focus is in the area of childhood hearing loss.
