Parent Experiences Monitoring Aided Audibility

Audibility is a critical component for children who are deaf or hard of hearing learning spoken language. For children to have access to the speech signal, as a foundation, they need appropriately programmed hearing devices. An equally critical aspect, however, is how audibility is monitored in daily life, and parents play a central role. Parents, for example, monitor hearing device use, basic device function, and observe how their child is managing in different listening environments. In this presentation, we will report parent experiences monitoring aided audibility for hearing aids, bone conduction hearing aids and cochlear implants, challenges they experience, and advice they have for professionals. Findings from this study have implications parent education and support, and opportunities for improvements in practice.

Karen Muñoz is department head and professor of audiology at Utah State University in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. She is also associate director of the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. Her research focus is in the area of childhood hearing loss.

Makynzie Larsen is a graduate student currently working on her doctorate of audiology degree at Utah State University and is expected to graduate in 2021. She graduated from Utah State University with a bachelors of science in communicative disorders. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband and dog hiking and mountain biking.
