Foundational Skills Resources
This presentation will share key findings about early language acquisition and how these can support cognition, neuroscience, and behavior development among children. The research will include current hot topics in numeracy, phonological, alphabetic, vocabulary, and language skills development. There are multiple pathways to reading and these will be shared with the participants, and the emphasis will be on early language acquisition to support children's milestones and normal language development during their critical period. Not only research will be shared, but the participants will leave this session with concrete plans and resources to support the children. The resources are free for downloads and distributions. This session is ideal for parents, early interventionists, preschool educators, and deaf mentors, and any other entities who work closely with children from 0-5 years old. These will help children build the skills needed to meet the language milestones for normal development and get them ready for school and to learn to read.

Melissa Herzig

Dr. Melissa Herzig is the Director of the Translation in the Science of Learning Center of the Visual Language and Visual Learning and the Co-Founder and Assistant Director for the Ph.D. in Educational Neuroscience program at Gallaudet University. She is responsible for leading assessments and evaluations of the Center’s resources—both for VL2 and for her work with schools. She has a BA in Biology from Gallaudet University. She received a MA and her Doctoral Degree in Teaching and Learning at University of California, San Diego. She worked at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla California, Language and Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at San Diego State University, and at Center for Research in Language at UCSD. She was a teacher at a mainstreamed high school for 8 years, and a supervisor for student teachers and interns at UCSD and National University. She has published numerous articles about language learning, bilingualism, and motivation for reading.
