Are You Dating Me or Your Phone? An Observational Study of Media Use for Romantic Couples in the United States and Saudi Arabia

A number of studies have utilized observational research to examine phone use during mealtimes including parents and young children; however, though survey-based research has examined such practices in romantic couples, there is no observational research examining how media use might impact couple time. The current study consisted of an observational study to examine the ways couples use phones during mealtime. Research assistants observed a total of 138 couples (from the United States and Saudi Arabia) and took detailed field notes to examine practices surrounding media use. Approximately 78% of couples used media during the relationship interaction. Findings suggest that couples cross-culturally and of different ages may choose to use media in ways to connect (co-viewing) or disconnect (technoference) with one another.
