Observing Student-Centered Mathematics Lessons: Ensuring Mathematics Learning for All Students
The Utah Effective Teaching Standards (UETS) are very student centered. As you move from Not Effective to Highly Effective on the rubrics, there is a well-defined shift from teacher-centered practices to student-centered learning. Principals and other observers must be looking for teaching practices that put students at the forefront of their own learning. Fortunately, the Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices described in "Principles to Actions" published by NCTM in 2014 provide an easily observable framework to see that shift in action. Participants in this session will explore the UETS to identify the aspects of student-centered learning they embody. They will practice using "look-fors" based on the Effective Mathematics Teachings Practices to give descriptive feedback for growth to teachers to further student learning.
- Participants will recognize the student-centered nature of the Utah Effective Teaching Standards as they explore the rubrics for each performance expectation in standards one through seven.
- Participants will connect the UETS to the Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices through exploring a set of observation "look-fors" based on the teaching practices.
- Participants will recognize the value of observing mathematics classrooms with the "look-fors" and prepare coaching feedback based on a short video observation of a mathematics lesson.

David Smith is currently the Leader Effectiveness Specilist for the Utah State Board of Education. He primarily works with principals and their supervisors to increase their effectiveness in observing and evaluating teachers in a culture of growth. He previously served as STEM Coordinator and elementary mathematics specialist at the USBE for 7 years.Before that, he was an elementary school principal for 20 years and the Utah Assessment Development Coordinator for 2 years. He has taught 2nd, 5th, and middle school students. He has conducted professional learning in many areas of Utah and has led the design and implementation of many professional learning opportunities in elementary mathematics.
