Accessing Safety for Deaf Victims Together (TF)
This informative and interactive workshop will focus on how law enforcement can ensure safety and accessibility for the Deaf Victims they serve. Communication strategies will be discussed and practiced.
- Participants will learn about Deaf Culture and effective communication tips
- Participants will practice hands on communication tools
- Participants will learn about the ADA law on required accessibility

Sari is a lifelong Utahan. Her grandparents and parents attended and graduated from Utah School for the Deaf. She graduated from Utah School for the Deaf in 1984. Sari’s Deaf son graduated from California School for the Deaf in Fremont. She has five children, including her Deaf son, and is a grandmother of three girls and three boys. She lived in California for six years, where she her man Glenn Williams. She’s a natural advocate and has worked with Sego Lily Center for the Abused Deaf since 2003. She has a way to make clients feel comfortable and safe with her laid back personality. Now her job keeps her busy helping victims get legal protection and services. She looks forward to helping the legal system provide more access.
She loves to explore the outdoors, and loves to watch her children and grandchildren grow. Her laughter makes people feel good and when they hear her laugh, they know she is somewhere close by!

Stephanie Mathis

Stephanie Mathis, a Southern Californian native, is the executive director of Sego Lily Center for the Abused Deaf (SLCAD) in Salt Lake City, Utah. She worked for SLCAD for 9 years and enjoys working with people who are passionate about keeping the Deaf Community safe. She graduated from Gallaudet University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling with an Associate Clinical Mental Health Counseling license.
Not only does Stephanie work with survivors of abuse, but much of her time is spent on training service providers such as interpreters, law enforcement agencies, mental health counselors, lawyers, and domestic violence shelter staff to provide accessible and effective services to Deaf survivors of abuse.
She has two other passions: her family (3 sons, one daughter, a loving husband) AND dancing. Stephanie is a certified Zumba Instructor who’s outlook on life is much like the Leann’s Womack’s song
