Agricultural Book Club - The Thing About Luck

During our presentation, we will share highlights of the 5th grade after-school book club we developed using, The Thing About Luck. This will include the Educator Guide we created to accompany the book, explicit instruction on close reading from a Reading Specialist, several hands-on activities, and a basic overview of what the six-week club looked like. This after-school book club that touched on areas of math, social studies, science, and language arts could also be expanded for use at a library, a YMCA program, a day care facility, or even within a classroom.

Presenters/Authors

Maren Reid (), Belvidere CUSD#100, mreid@district100.com;
I am in my 14th year as an educator. For the last 9 years I have worked as a Reading Specialist at the middle school and elementary level. Growing up on a hog and grain farm instilled in me a love of the land and all things agriculture. Ag in the Classroom has been one way I am able to pass the value of agriculture onto my students. Currently I am working as a Reading Coach, so when Diane approached me about writing a grant for an Ag Book Club, I was thrilled to have an opportunity to combine reading and agriculture.
