Building Natural Literacy Through Organic Writing
Explore how a child’s own ideas can be used to help teach phonics, sentence structure, punctuation and independent writing skills. Every child’s first written word (either before or after their own name) seems to be “Mom" or “Dad”. This is because these words have meaning for the child. Participants in this workshop will learn how to build on this natural love of reading and writing within each child; from a single word, to sentences, and then personal narratives. This is a method that can be used at all levels of intervention. It builds confidence, independence and ownership in a child’s reading and writing by drawing on their own experiences. Participants will walk away inspired to teach reading and writing. This workshop will give you tools for creating excited and authentic writers; from the first written word to editing, revising and publishing larger pieces.
- Participants will discover how a child’s own ideas can be used to teach phonics, sentence structure and independent writing skills.
- Attendees will practice the 6 movements of the Organic Writing method and discuss implementation in an inclusive classroom or intervention groupings.
- Participants will combine and utilize the 6 traits of writing with the Organic Writing method.
