Special Needs Mom Twice
Being a parent of a special needs child is most of the time unexpected but of two is even more rare. There are about 11.2 million children with special health care needs in the United States or one in five households caring for a special needs child. However, there are an estimated 2.8 million families, 1.3 percent, reported raising two or more children with a disability. I am one of those few lucky mothers who has two special needs children. One daughter who has a genetic disorder called 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and a son who is deaf. Many special needs children have a wide range of continuous medical needs. Children can range from one to multiple diagnosis and the need of multiple medical specialists. Many follow up appointments, Therapy sessions, medical equipment, and training. Oftentimes parents feel burnt out. The constant worry of the unknown, financial burden, and family understanding. Adjusting time and routines and strategies for each child can be overwhelming. Oftentimes parents feel alone. It is vital to address parents' physical and mental health and to provide support to improve overall well-being.
Each child is unique, with individual strengths and weaknesses. Remember to recognize each child’s efforts and intentions. Because family life is often driven by the interests and capabilities of the children with special needs, normal family routines may be sacrificed. The bond between two special needs siblings is so unique. I have witnessed empathy, understanding, and compassion between my children. Advocating for one another. They can relate to each other when it comes to doctor visits, labs, therapy, and hospital admission. I will use my experience, perspective, and findings to share with EI provider and parent's so I can provide suggestions, resources, and support.
- Participants will identify at least two strategies on self-care
- Participants will detect the importance of support and resources
- Participants will recognize the benefit of collaborating with other institutes.
