But You Speak So Well: Perspectives of DHH Adults in the EHDI System
This presentation will provide the perspective of two DHH adults using spoken language who work in various areas of the EHDI system. Topics explored will include: assumptions regarding needs and accommodations of families and children who choose spoken language, experiences of DHH adults using spoken language working in the EHDI system, impacts of COVID on DHH adults using spoken language and potential implications for the EHDI population, value of working with DHH adults to help families/children develop healthy identity, and the value of having a DHH adult as part of the entry point of the EHDI system to set families up for success.
- Participants will be able to state potential assumptions in working with DHH children and families from the perspective of two DHH adults.
- Participants will be able to state the benefit of having DHH adults integrated into the various areas of the EHDI system.
- Participants will explore the importance of DHH adults working to understand their own biases and how it might impact the way they relate to families in the EHDI system.

Sara Robinson, M.A., CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Family Consultant for Children’s Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs. She has specialized in working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing for over 12 years, first at Boys Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, NE and then at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She enjoys working with children of all ages and communication modalities to help each child and family reach their full potential. Sara grew up hard of hearing and uses her experiences to help guide families along their journey.

Allison Cunningham

Allison is a pediatric audiologist at Children's Hospital Colorado. Shaped by her own experiences growing up hard of hearing, Allison has a special interest in self advocacy and resiliency of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Her volunteer role as a Court Appointed Special Advocate has changed her perspective in how families are informed and supported throughout their journey.
