Raising Instructional Expectations for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities: Teaching Grade Level Alternate Standards

The focus of this session will be for educators who are working with students with significant cognitive disabilities and who should be receiving instruction on alternate achievement standards. There will be discussion about factors IEP teams might consider to determine if a student should be receiving instruction through alternate standards. Participants will understand the importance of teaching to these alternate standards, how to pinpoint standards that are relevant for their student population and tools for unpacking these standards, as well as providing instruction on these standards.

  • Participants will understand who is a student with a significant cognitive disability and should be receiving instruction on Essential Elements/Alternate Standards
  • participants will understand unpacking the alternative standards for their student's grade levels
  • Participants will learn how to use several different tools to support their teaching alternative standards

Tanya Semerad , M.Ed. Has worked in Special Education with a primary focus on students with autism for 25 years. She started as a teacher in a special school in Northern California working with young children with behavioral challenges. Tanya taught at the Pingree Center for Autism for many years before teaching in a special class in Granite School District, for students with autism and other learning challenges. Until recently, Tanya spent the last 10 years as an autism/inclusion specialist for Granite School District. She recently accepted a position for the Utah Sate Board of Education as Autism/Significant Cognitive Specialist.
