We Are All Atypical:Celebrating Individuals and Families in EHDI
This fast-paced panel discussion detailing journeys through EHDI by a group of diverse parents with high achieving children is designed to highlight the individual in the system. The facilitator, an experienced early interventionist, teacher, and speech-language pathologist, along with the panelists will assist participants in seeing beyond the audiogram or chosen communication option(s) to appreciate individual strengths of a family that can be tapped to help a child succeed. Parents from a variety of geographic locations, backgrounds, and with a range of children’s ages/amplification/communication choices will share their insights about what worked in the EHDI system for their child and family. Opportunities for professionals and parents in the audience to share unique stories will be encouraged.
- Participants will describe aspects of EHDI systems (from screening to intervention)that can be shaped to support the individual characteristics of a child and family.
- Participants will identify the strengths of a child, a family, a community and supporting professionals that can build toward success of a young child who is deaf or hard of hearing.
- Participants will compare and contrast expected child outcomes with family stories presented.

Denise Davis-Pedrie

Denise Davis-Pedrie is a speech-language pathologist and teacher of the deaf with a specialist certification in Infant/Toddler Special Education. She served for more than twenty years as a Colorado Hearing Resource Coordinator with the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind, supporting families with newly identified children, birth to three years of age. Additionally, Denise has more than 20 years of experience as a preschool teacher for children with hearing loss in an inclusive classroom. Denise is a member of the Board of Directors for Colorado Families for Hands and Voices.

Sara Kennedy

Sara is a mom of four children, including a daughter who was born at home and later identified with progressive loss. An occupational therapist by training, Sara has worked for Hands & Voices since 2001 as the editor for the quarterly newspaper, the Communicator. Sara has a special interest in advocating for hearing screening in the homebirth community. She was a coauthor for the Virtual Waiting Room web presence at Hands & Voices, the handbook Bridge to Preschool: Navigating a Successful Transition as well as articles and presentations on teaching our deaf/hh children about sex, promoting self-advocacy, progressive hearing loss, and the decision process regarding cochlear implants. Sara transitioned out of her role as Director of Colorado Hands & Voices since 2011 at the end of February 2022. She finds her new consulting role with her young adult children rewarding and challenging.
