Talking About Suicide: A Thematic Analysis of /r/SuicideWatch

Suicide is among the top 10 causes of death in the United States. In order to change this, researchers, clinicians, and the public need to understand more about the different warning signs of suicide ideation. Many people take to social media to express their thoughts of suicide. Using posts made to the Reddit forum /r/SuicideWatch during one 24-hour period, this qualitative thematic analysis was conducted to understand what people talk about when they discuss their suicide-related thoughts and behaviors. The identification of the common themes that emerged from this research can help researchers, clinicians, and the public notice the possible warning signs of suicide ideation.
