All Things Audiology: Demystifying Audiograms, Acronyms and Audiology-Speak for Parents

Audiology is often the entry way into an unexpected world for parents of children who are deaf/hard of hearing. From the moment a newborn hearing screening result is related as a "refer" or concern is raised about how your baby hears, families start down an unanticipated path. This session is designed to inform and engage parents in an overview about "all things Audiology". Active participation by parents enhances the impact of audiology services from diagnosis through decision-making about equipment and devices. Understanding audiometric profiles, technology options and the specifics about your child's individual hearing lays the groundwork for productive, outcome-oriented encounters with your audiologist. A review of common terminology about hearing, test techniques and protocols used by Audiologists (including the overload of acronyms!) will aid in demystifying "Audiology-Speak" for both new and experienced parents and other non-audiologists. Parents are encouraged to jump-in and ask questions with a desired outcome for the next visit to the Audiologist to be more collaborative and conversational.

  • Parents will apply audiological concepts to describe their child's hearing sensitivity
  • Parents will recognize opportunities to optimize communication with the Audiologist
  • Parents will formulate an Audiology Action Plan to discuss with their Managing Audiologist
