Essential Programs to Coach and Empower

Parent empowerment is a leading topic in hearing health and habilitation around the world, yet practitioners in low- and limited-income countries remain challenged with sustainable outcomes in parent engagement and responsiveness. Many caregivers face harsh stigma, barriers to inclusion, and limited parent supports. Communication development, literacy, and social emotional growth of children with hearing loss are often delayed and remain a challenge. Many practitioners and parents must learn to cope with children’s disabilities among limited knowledge, poverty, and poor health conditions. The predicament of most parents living in resource poor communities and the complexity of a global hearing health and humanitarian industry requires the traditional approach to parent interventionism must change. Partners for A Greater Voice (PGV), a non-profit international training and education organization, implemented a parent education survey in 2015 (completed by over 450 parents) which led to the development of Essential Programs to Coach and Empower. The initiative is designed around the psychological well-being of parental caregivers. It is focused on parent potential and coaching strategies universally accepted across culture and socio-economic status. This poster presentation illustrates PGV's current initiative and resource to foster caregiver well-being with the goal of improving their capacity and responsiveness. Five domains of well-being are presented which can support practitioners in their practices.

  • To engage practitioners in new and holistic parent interventions
  • To promote caregiver well-being as a priority
  • To enable caregivers through positive psychology
