Leadership and Collaboration from Where You Are

Leadership and collaboration are highly valued characteristics in our society. Leaders tend to be rewarded by moving up the ladder in their respective fields. Yet, the number of positions “at the top” is limited and are often not filled by junior colleagues. This presentation will address how those working on the front lines in early intervention, directly with families, can utilize leadership and collaboration strategies and employ leadership techniques to improve family and child outcomes (Harry, 2012). We will explore what it means to lead from where you are, that is, whether you are an early childhood/deaf educator, audiologist, deaf mentor, SLP or other professional. We will also offer insights about the leadership and collaboration qualities that can make a strong and positive impact when working with families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

  • 1. Describe a minimum of three leadership styles often represented in the helping fields
  • 2. Discuss a minimum of two leadership and collaboration strategies/techniques that can personally benefit EI providers and other professionals who work with families.
  • 3. Identify a minimum of two ways that the leadership and collaboration qualities of a professional can influence family and child outcomes.

Amy Szarkowski, PhD, is the Director of The Institute and The Clinic at the Children's Center for Communication/ Beverly School for the Deaf (CCCBSD), and faculty for LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities), at Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. Szarkowski holds an academic appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She is also an adjunct instructor for the Infants, Toddlers and Families (ITF) Interdisciplinary program at Gallaudet University.

Marilyn Sass-Lehrer (), Gallaudet University, marilyn.sass-lehrer@gallaudet.edu;
Marilyn Sass-Lehrer is Professor Emerita at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. She received a master’s degree in Deaf Education from New York University and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in Early Childhood Education and Curriculum and Instruction. She is an adjunct professor in Gallaudet University's Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infants, Toddlers and Their Families Interdisciplinary Program. She is editor of Early Intervention for Deaf and Hard-of- Hearing Infants, Toddlers and their Families: Interdisciplinary Perspectives (2016), and has several other publications related to early intervention. Dr. Sass-Lehrer is actively involved in professional development and learning for early intervention providers.
