A Framework for Making Instructionally Sound Data-Based Decisions

“If a student is progressing according to plan, then the program is appropriate for the student. Otherwise, there is a flaw in the program and it needs to be changed in some way. In other words, the student’s performance determines ‘right’ teaching strategy.” (Lindsley, O. R. (1990b). Precision teaching: By teachers for children. Teaching Exceptional Children, 22(3), 10-15.) When data is collected on student performance, it must analyzed against a set pre-determined questions or rules. The data should compel us to change our practice - the ways we organize learning activities, the ways we deliver instruction, and the ways in which students demonstrate what they know. If data do not result in changes in curriculum, delivery of instruction, student learning activities, then we cannot expect to see change in student learning.
