Engaging Corporate Volunteer and Skills Giving Programs

Corporate volunteerism is on the rise. The momentum of corporate volunteering is being fueled by a vision that providing serving opportunities to employees is a critical element of a business’ strategic plan. More than 90% of Fortune 500 companies have programs to utilize employees in community engagement projects. As corporations look to create meaningful and effective volunteer experiences for their employees, non-profit organizations focusing on delivering hearing healthcare in low-resource communities have the opportunity to leverage needed resources from the business community, including skilled volunteers and fundraising. Creating an effective corporate volunteer programs requires the ability to meet corporate expectations; create sufficient opportunities for volunteering; and select, as well acknowledge, volunteer employees appropriately. A strong example of an effective corporate volunteer program, Sonova founded the non-profit Hear the World Foundation to create a world in which each person has the chance of good hearing in 2006 and began employee volunteer engagement in 2013. Today, employee volunteering is a critical competent of the Foundation’s work. All employees are offered the opportunity to be actively involved through fundraising, offering technological support, and serving as subject matter experts for projects selected by Hear the World Foundation. Join our discussion on why corporations are increasing corporate volunteerism, how to build a corporate volunteering and skills giving programs, and an example of an effective corporate volunteer engagement program.

  • The participant will be able to state the benefits to corporations of partnering with non-profit organizations to create corporate volunteer opportunities.
  • The participant will be able to identify needs for creating an effective and sustainable corporate volunteer program.
  • The participant will have an appreciation for structure and impact of a successful corporate volunteer engagement program.

Edie Gibson received her MS in Audiology from Gallaudet University and Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Florida. Prior to joining Advanced Bionics in 2005, she worked as a pediatric audiologist in a non-profit clinic. Dr. Gibson has engaged as an employee volunteer through Sonova’s Hear the World Foundation since 2014, numerous times serving as a skilled volunteer with the Hear Haiti project, organizing corporate fundraising, and serving as an employee member of the Hear The World Foundation Board.
